Tinnitus care in Chiclana Ringing and buzzing in the ears: we can help
Tinnitus is hearing a sound that has no outside source: ringing, buzzing, hissing or humming. It is very common and, in many cases, how much it bothers you day to day can be greatly reduced.
Tinnitus
What is tinnitus?
Tinnitus is the perception of a sound that doesn’t come from outside. You may hear it in one ear, in both or “inside your head”, and it may be constant or come and go.
It is usually more noticeable in quiet places, for example when going to bed. It is more common with age and in people exposed to noise, and it often goes hand in hand with hearing loss, even when the person isn’t aware of it. That’s why the first step is a proper hearing assessment.
See your doctor as soon as possible if tinnitus starts suddenly, is only in one ear, beats in time with your pulse, appears after a head injury or comes with dizziness or sudden hearing loss.
Why it happens
Common causes of tinnitus
Tinnitus isn’t a disease in itself but a sign. These are the most common causes:
Hearing loss
The most common cause, especially age-related hearing loss.
Noise exposure
A very loud noise or long-term exposure at work or during leisure.
Earwax build-up
Built-up wax can cause buzzing and a blocked feeling in the ear.
Ear problems
Infections, otitis and other conditions of the middle or inner ear.
Medication
Some medicines can cause tinnitus or make it worse.
Stress and tiredness
Rarely the cause, but they make tinnitus more noticeable.

Day to day
Tips for living with tinnitus
These habits help tinnitus bother you less while you look for a solution.
Avoid complete silence
A soft background sound (calm music, the radio, nature sounds) makes it less noticeable, also at night.
Protect your ears
Use hearing protection in noisy places so it doesn’t get worse.
Rest well
Good sleep and less stress help tinnitus fade into the background.
Nothing in your ear
Don’t try to remove wax with cotton buds or objects: you may push it further in.

Questions about tinnitus
If you have another question, call us or send us a WhatsApp message: we’ll be happy to help.
Can tinnitus be cured?
It depends on the cause. When it is due to earwax or an infection, it usually goes away once treated. In other cases there is no treatment that removes it completely, but there are solutions that greatly reduce how much it bothers you, such as sound therapy or hearing aids when there is hearing loss.
Can a hearing aid help with tinnitus?
For many people with hearing loss, yes. By bringing back the sounds the ear had stopped picking up, tinnitus usually becomes less noticeable. Some hearing aids also include a sound generator for sound therapy.
When should I see a doctor about ringing in my ear?
As soon as possible if tinnitus starts suddenly, is only in one ear, beats in time with your pulse, appears after a head injury or comes with dizziness or sudden hearing loss. Otherwise, it is a good idea to have a hearing assessment to find out the state of your hearing.
